Each year the Environmental Working Group puts out a list of the 12 “dirtiest” and 15 “cleanest” fruits and veggies so us consumers can assess which of these we want to purchase organic and which are OK if we don’t.
Topping this year’s list for the first time: STRAWBERRIES! Second place honor goes to APPLES! Those closest to me will tell you I eat an organic Granny Smith green apple with a little organic natural peanut butter 5-6 days of the week! It’s my daily indulgence. 🙂
Pesticides, herbicides and fungicides have been linked to:
- thyroid dysfunction
- increased weight/inability to lose weight
- low energy/chronic fatigue
- allergies and food sensitivities
So, if you’re interested in avoiding the top 12 fruits and veggies with the most crap on them, check out this list below. If you’re concerned about the cost of buying organic here are a few tips:
- consider shopping at your local food co-op or farmer’s market
- check out local CSA boxes (community supported agriculture)
- restrict your organic purchases to the dirty dozen list below
